Michael Unga is a self-taught artist from the
Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire), but has recently made a new home for
himself in Johannesburg, South Africa. Michael's preferred medium is oil on
canvas, but he also works in watercolour.
His work generally depicts typical scenes from daily life in the Congo, or as
he describes it, "it reflects the rhythm of the Congo lifestyle, ….where
we are always dancing and playing music." It is this element of
simplicity which adds a refreshing quality to Michael's work. He goes on to
successfully combine rich colours and textures with subtle movement, capturing
the energy and warmth of the African landscape and its people.
The following artworks are a representation of the Artist's body of work. A wider
selection
is available for viewing at Afrikana Gallery in South Melbourne. |
