The images in Greg Joffe's ceramic sculptures and
light fittings draw on mythological archetypes of Old World Cultures Many of
these images focus on man as both a spiritual and animal being. Not only is
Greg motivated by his extensive travels to the countries of these ancient
cultures, but he also finds a very personal inspiration through introspective,
spiritual journeys beyond the physical plain.
Greg's most recent and very successful development is a range of ceramic light
fittings. Some are decorated with geometric designs and whole number ratios,
to portray balance and harmony. Others resemble the shape, patterns and
texture of a basket, an effect that is further highlighted when the light is
on. Greg obtains the effect by using a basket as a mould to shape and texture
a slab of clay, in much the same way primitive societies lined their baskets
with clay, yet another reflection of Old World culture in his work.
