Charmaine Haines' reputation is prominently
established in the South African ceramic scene. Her work has been selected to
represent South Africa, not only at the Johannesburg Biennale, but also in
international exhibitions in France, Switzerland, England, Hong Kong and
Burkina Faso. In 2001, Charmaine was invited with a group of nine leading
South African ceramic artists to attend a residency at the International
Ceramic Centre in Skaelskor, Denmark.
Working within the realm of figurative clay, Charmaine uses both abstract and stylised
symbols and motives to embellish both her sculptural and utility forms.
Vessels are thrown and titleered incorporating sculptural elements and
semi-reliefs. Coloured stains and natural oxide washes are used to further
exemplify the manipulative and expressive quality of the clay surface,
including carving and textures, showing a strong sense of surface pattern.
The following artworks are a representation of the Artist's body of work. A wider
selection
is available for viewing at Afrikana Gallery in South Melbourne. |
