Donvé Branch has been a leading South African potter
for over 30 years. She first received national recognition for her classic
functional reduction ware, and won awards in both national and provincial
exhibitions. Her work was selected for inclusion in the beautifully
illustrated 'Contemporary Ceramics in South Africa' in 1991.
Donvé now works in kaolin and bastitle clay and uses primitive firing methods
to explore the dynamic inter-play of fire and earth that define traditional
African pots. titlehough her pots retain the purity of line and form that
characterise the Western tradition, the closed-forms are influenced by the
functionality and strength of the rural potter's ware. This cultural interplay
is also reflected in the beaded foot rings of the shallow dishes, which may be
gently decorated with artefacts from the African veldt and beach.
