Donvé Branch has been a leading South African potter for over 30 years. She first received national recognition for her classic functional reduction ware, and won awards in both national and provincial exhibitions. Her work was selected for inclusion in the beautifully illustrated 'Contemporary Ceramics in South Africa' in 1991.

Donvé now works in kaolin and bastitle clay and uses primitive firing methods to explore the dynamic inter-play of fire and earth that define traditional African pots. titlehough her pots retain the purity of line and form that characterise the Western tradition, the closed-forms are influenced by the functionality and strength of the rural potter's ware. This cultural interplay is also reflected in the beaded foot rings of the shallow dishes, which may be gently decorated with artefacts from the African veldt and beach.
